How can I tell if a ring setting is a real diamond?

I have a ring with a heart shaped diamond or piece of glass and it has rainbow colors at certain angles when I put it up to a light source. Does this mean that it's glass or a real diamond?|||Put the potential diamond in front of your mouth and fog it like you would try to fog a mirror. If it stays fogged for 2-4 seconds, it鈥檚 a fake. A real diamond disperses the heat instantaneously so by the time you look at it, it has already cleared up.

However, there is a downfall to this test: oil and dirt on the stone can affect its reliability and the test is not accurate at all on doublets where the top of the stone is diamond and the bottom is cubic zirconia glued together.

|||These days, there are "knock-off" diamonds or cubic zurconia's that look SOOOOOO real that it is very difficult for amature eyes to tell if it's the real thing or not. My suggestion to you would be to take it to a jewlery store (like one in the mall) and get a professional to look at it under their magnifying glass. Most places will do this quick glance free of charge.

Hope this helps!|||try to cut glass with it. If it is real it should work. If not its fake.|||Take it and get it appraised if in doubt
