I absolutely LOVE my 3 stone diamond engagement setting but want to upgrade the center diamond. Currently my 3 stone ring is a carat total and I have a .70 carat diamond I want to replace the center stone with. Can I do this or will I have to buy a completely new setting to fit the diamond?
Thanks for your time.|||Hi Kyra. It sounds to me as though you've already found a jeweler who will trade up the center diamond for you, which is great. As for the setting, it really depends upon what size you are trading up to. Bear in mind that the difference in PHYSICAL size between a 0.70ct (approx 5.8mm width), a 0.80ct (approx 6.1mm width), a 0.90ct (approx 6.3mm) and 1.00ct (approx 6.5mm width) is fractional - the TOTAL difference between a 0.70ct and 1.00ct is only 0.7mm. Assuming your center diamond is currently held in place with prongs, then it shouldn't be a problem to insert a larger stone (within reason!), ad prongs allow alot of flexibility with stone size. Whoever does the setting will need to make sure, however, that they don't damage the prongs in any way when they unsetting the old diamond and resetting the new diamond, as any damage could jeopardise the security of the setting in the long run. Assuming they are professional jewelers, then I don't see a problem. I hope this helps you.|||A jeweler will be able to tell you for sure, but generally they will have to replace the head (you don't mention what the current center stone carat is but even a minor change in diamond size is major to the security of your diamond. To be safe and, if you have it, protect the diamond bond jewelers will start with a new head and custom fit it to your diamond). As I imagine the side stones are butted up against the center stone pretty tightly, those would most likely need to be removed and reset/soldered again. The shank itself probably won't change, though.|||Most likely you can. You could probably even use the same prongs given the fairly insignificant size difference between a 1 ct and .7 ct.|||you need to take it to your local jeweller and they will refit the new diamond in the old setting. :)
